4. Coach and Player Development

- Coach Applications

We are looking for applicants for Head Coach/Assistant Coach positions for all levels for the upcoming season.

Those of you interested in either position need to fill out the Coaching application for and send it by August 31 to the director of Coach Development

- Checking vs non Checking Survey (House Teams)

APMHA like last year, is asking parents of Peewee players (1999 and 2000) but also parents of Atom players (2001-2002) to please respond to this survey in order for the Director of House Programs to start planning. If you have not completed the survey:

- Peewee Checking Clinic

The clinic will be run again this year by Pat Malloy, Director of Hockey Programming and Head Instructor of Peak Performance and Elite Hockey (date TBA but during the conditioning camps). Pat is a former Coach and Director of Player Development in the Central Junior "A" Hockey League and has Tier II Junior "A" playing experience along with "Speak Out" Program Certification with Hockey Canada.
Pat is currently an Associate Coach with the Ottawa Jr. Senators CJHL Junior "A". All our Peewee Coaches will be also participating in this clinic so that they can take on some valuable information and drills and apply to their following practices.

- Goalie Clinic

  • Conditioning Goalie Clinic: Greg Newton will be running 2 Goalie Clinics during the APMHA Conditioning Camps. Greg has been trained and has worked with Charlie MacTavish who is the Goalie Consultant of the Smithfalls Junior A Bears. This clinic will be ran free of charge for the participants.
  • In season Goalie Clinics: Once again this year, APMHA will be offering this clinic which will be sponsored by APMHA for the ice and also partly subsidized with the RBC grant that APMHA has received for the development of our players. The clinic will be ran by Coach Greg Newton. The cost per player will be minimal and we will encourage all our goalies (Novice to Midget) to participate.

- Power and performance Skating

In it’s 4th consecutive year, the CanPower will be run in Almonte every Monday starting Oct 3 in Almonte (6-7 PM for initiation and Novice and 7-8 pm for Atom and up). This clinic will be also partly subsidized with the RBC grant that APMHA has received for the development of our players. More details will be posted late August on our website.

- Coach Stream, Trainer and Speakout Clinic

Clinics are hosted and offered this year for our APMHA coaches and team staff. Coach stream fees will be reimbursed to the APMHA coaches upon successful completion of their Post Task homework. Trainer and Speakout fees will be waived for the APMHA applicants who are volunteering with APMHA teams (or MTK teams when APMHA is your home association).

All Trainer must have their valid Trainer I certification (you need to check your certification expiry date).

For Bantam and Midget – we remind Trainers that they will need their Standard First Aid and CPR C in order to obtain the Trainer II level. Although APMHA doesn’t host a particular clinic, we have partnered with Life Rescue in Carleton Place and we encourage you to check their schedule and register for a course.

First Aid and CPR fees will bee reimbursed for the Bantam and Midget trainer who are volunteering for and APMHA team (or an MTK teams when APMHA is your home association).

All Team bench staff and Team manager must have their speakout [fees are waived for APMHA members volunteering in an APMHA team]

  • Coach Stream Clinic: Oct 14 and 15 – Almonte
  • Trainer I: October 23
  • Speakout: Oct 25
  • First Aid and CPR course schedule: Life Rescue

On behalf of the APMHA executive,

I wish all our competitive players very successful tryouts and eager to see all our members  at our Hockey Swap and BBQ Day or at the Pakenham Arena for our pre-season conditioning camps.
