APMHA Bantam B Teams take to the Rideau Canal for Some Fun

2010-03-09

The camaraderie that has developed between many young Almonte-Pakenham Minor Hockey players, their parents and their coaches was demonstrated on Sunday, February 21, 2010, when the two friendly rival APMHA Bantam B teams took to the ice of the Ottawa Rideau Canal for some fun...

The idea of a joint team event, taking advantage of the break between the regular minor hockey season and the play-off round, was the brainchild of Bryan Kealey, coach of the Bantam B1 team.

The group travelled together to Ottawa by bus early Sunday morning to beat the rush of skaters on the last day of the Winterlude Festival.  Players, coaches and family members alike enjoyed a 2 hours skate on the canal, with some doing the full distance from Dow’s Lake to Laurier Street and back. Of course, players re-fuelled for the return skate with an infamous “Beavertail” snack. The skate was followed by a joint team buffet lunch including one of the highlights of the day where players were told they had beat the all time restaurant record for number of servings of French fries for a group their size.

The real success of the day was not the lucky weather, how fast or far anyone skated, or even the French fries record. It was simply that everyone had fun and left with a great memory of the Bantam B hockey season.
